New Etiquette

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

I have decided to do a bit of a repost on a post I did a while back but it certainly isn’t out of date. It’s on the etiquette of Social media and weddings. It is also fitting because I am waiting really patiently before posting the stunning pics of my last wedding. {beautiful bride, fab photographers, perfect day, everything you could want!} I think it is important that the couple and their families are able to enjoy them first before I share them with you. No matter how much work I or other vendors {and they were fantastic too!} put into the wedding, it was their day after all and they deserve a bit of private time to reflect. So enough of that, here is the post!!

I was on one of my favorite wedding forums recently Mrs.2B and joined a discussion about guests posting wedding photos on public social networking sites. The consensus was that this is a big NO NO!

In fairness, posting photos of yourselves having fun at a wedding is great and a bride wants to see photos of her guests having a great time, but photos of her and her new husband  before they have seen them may be something you should check out first. In many cases guests follow the pros around to get the great shots and post them before the couple has seen the professional ones. Now we know the quality is not going to be the same but still, let the couple enjoy them first. Most couples are also doing wedding websites where you can submit and share photos of the day for the couple and all of the guests to see. This is nice and private and fine to share them there.

In fact the girls were trying to figure out a way to ask guests politely and nicely not to post their photos on the public social networking sites and nothing seemed subtle yet effective enough to get the message across.

I (of course) jumped in and suggested that because everyone has digital cameras these days,  instead of putting the disposable cameras (which were so popular a few years ago) on the tables to put blank writable disks on the tables for the guests to take home and load their photos on. With these, not only can you get them cheaply (less than the disposable cameras that never gave good photos) but you can also personalize them with self print labels or sleeves on which you request that your guests load the photos on them and send back to the couple to upload on to their wedding website and to please not post them on various websites.  Here are some ideas of what is out there.

What do you think about this issue? Would you be upset to see your wedding photos on someone else’s Facebook page?

Our new sweetie is the Whoopie Pie!

This new {but traditionally Amish} treat is the new craze in America and moving quickly over the Atlantic. It is two individually baked round cakes, normally chocolate, pressed together with a lovely sweet, creamy frosting sandwiched between them but you could use any flavor or color really. But don’t be fooled, they are really more like a cookie than a pie or a cake.

Apparently, Amish women used to bake these {called hucklebucks back then} and put them in farmers’ lunchboxes. When farmers would find the yummy treats in their lunch, they would shout “Whoopie!”

Perfect stacked for display, in cello bags as a yummy favor for guests or a great late night snack. Don’t forget the milk.

You can buy them {M&S does them now and sold out on their first day in the shops} and I found all of these lovelies on Wicked Whoopies.

Unfortunately I don’t yet know the perfect recipe for them but this is how Martha told me to make them so surely they will be great:

Whoopie Pies
Makes 2 dozen sandwiches

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
2 cups buttermilk, room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
7 minute Frosting

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Sift together flour, salt, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside. Line two baking pans with Silpats (French nonstick baking mats) or parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Beat until well combined. Slowly add dry ingredients. Mix until combined.

2. Using a 1-ounce ice-cream scoop, place cookies onto lined baking pans, twelve per pan. Bake for 12 minutes. Remove to a rack to cool. Repeat with remaining batter.

3. Spread 2 tablespoons of frosting onto each of twenty-four of cookies. Sandwich together with remaining twenty-four cookies. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

7 minute Frosting

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon light corn syrup

4 large egg whites, room temperature

  1. Put 1 cup sugar, the corn syrup, and 1/2 cup water into a small heavy saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture just begins to simmer and sugar has dissolved, about 6 minutes. Wash down sides with a wet pastry brush to prevent crystals from forming. Raise heat to medium-high. Cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reaches 235 degrees.
  2. Meanwhile, put egg whites into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining tablespoon sugar, and beat until peaks are fluffy but still soft. Slowly pour in hot sugar syrup down side of bowl. Raise speed to high, and beat until mixture has cooled and stiff peaks form, about 7 minutes. Use immediately.

So whether you buy them or make them, they are just fun and tasty and yummy!

Retro Sweets

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Photo and table designed by Amy Atlas

Desserts and Sweets tables and displays are very popular these days and really fun. Show off your wedding cake on a table full of other candies, sweets and cakes for your guests to choose from.

They will double as favors when you give little cellophane bags for your guests to fill up!

The sweets can be retro, your own childhood favorites, color coordinated, or in shapes and themes of your choosing even personalized with your names and wedding date on them. The possibilities are endless!

Today though I am showing off a bit of retro fun with Hammond’s Candies. Remember the big lollypops you used to cry for as a child at the circus or amusement parks? – ok maybe I’m a bit older than you but these bring me waaayyy back.

They come in a HUGE assortment of colors too!

And a few others: Pantry Candies, Ribbons, Marshmallow Straws

And I love some of these:

These are Cocoa Stirrers so you can sip while they dissolve and sweeten & flavor your coffee, cocoa or hot beverage. Choose from Vanilla, Peppermint, Hot Cinnamon or Chai. And:

Sip your iced tea through a flavored straw! With these Tea Sippers you can sip while they dissolve and sweeten & flavor your iced tea. Choose from Lemon, Orange, Watermelon or Key Lime. Yum! I love my Iced Tea!

And these all natural for not and cold drinks in All Natural Green Tea, All Natural Lemon, All Natural Orange or All Natural Vanilla.

There are so many others to choose from. Hammond’s does Chocolate, handmade Caramels, marshmallows, flavored popcorn and nearly all that you can think of when it comes to sweets.

Have fun with them!
