Wedding Villages

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Wedding venues are shifting styles. We know that. Well, those of us who pay attention do anyway.

Things started in the typical hotel wedding {and actually most still are} then we see a shift to Castle venues {who doesn’t want to get married in a castle?}, to private manor houses. I’m not saying these venues are ‘out’, it’s just that I am seeing a lot of {what I will call} private villages. And I love this idea, but then I love anything private and exclusive where you, your families and guests are all together.

What this is, is normally one big house surrounded by other cottages in either a courtyard or smaller community of other self catering houses. So you get the whole property with it’s surroundings {and sometimes a pub} like a private little village.

Here are a few of my favourite examples.

Coolbawn Quay

Nestled on the eastern shores of Lough Derg in North Tipperary,  it is built in the style of a traditional Irish village with rooms, suites or charming cottages and houses, scattered throughout the meandering streets and lanes of the village leading to the harbour. Have your intimate wedding in the Schoolhouse or a larger group in a marquee. See a full wedding on Coolbawn Quay by David McClellend here

Inishbeg

Not only a private village but a private island! In west Cork with beautiful woodlands, parkland, farmland and gardens you can have your ceremony outside with  reception for 65 in the Boathouse or more in a seaside marquee. See the full wedding here as photographed by Aspect Photography

Clonabreeny House

in Co Meath, Clonabreany House consists of two magnificently restored Georgian houses, a beautifully restored courtyard with  10 cottages, a cosy private sibín bar, a banqueting hall catering for up to 60 people and a luxurious private bridal suite and Grand Marquee with bar, dancing and dining facilities catering for up to 220 guests. Christina Brosnan recently photographed a full wedding here.

BallymagarveyVillage

Also in Co Meath, Ballymagarvey Village is comprised of a substantial fortified country house flanked by a courtyard of beautifully conserved cut-stone cottages which once housed a working granary and flax mill. The courtyard cottages and mill buildings now provide luxury accommodation and a banqueting hall for private events. See the full wedding at Ballymagarvey here as shot by Brenda McGuire Photography

Something new to consider.

Summer Camp Wedding

Friday, July 15th, 2011

This is just about the most super creative and personal wedding I have seen in, gosh, I don’t’ know how long. Ever maybe? Let me set the scene.

This is Trishia & Justin’s wedding with all of the details perfectly captured by Jodi & Kurt {totally adorable in their own right} of Jodi Miller Photography.

Trishia + Justin had their wedding at The Nature Camp outside of Lexington, VA in the US of A where  Trishia had grown up going to camp. An ideal spot for their rustic wedding, they incorporated so many woodland elements, from the flowers to the little forest animals scattered throughout their wedding {wait til you see those!}.  They even had a wedding logo that symbolized them…two racoons, one with glasses, the other with a bow.  The logo was incorporated everywhere and it completely summed up their wedding.  Enjoy this incredible couple and their amazing DIY details!

Spot the raccoons?

How adorable are the butterflies in her hair!

Look!

Look! in the rings too!

Notice the guys boutonnieres? They are fabric!

Instead of a unity symbol, they opted to do something a little bit different.  They had a wooden box made and filled it with a bottle of whiskey and two love letters.  The box is supposed to symbolize their love when it was at its peak and whenever they go through a rough patch with their marriage, they can open the box, drink the whiskey and read the love letters they wrote to each other and reflect on why they fell in love.  The hope is that they never have to open the box, which is why they had their closest family and friends help seal the box during the ceremony. Love that!

Ready for those fabulous promised details? Here ya go!

Trishia made this curtain of flowers herself using recycled soda bottles. Great backdrop, eco friendly and wow!

Look! See it!

and again

So wonderful. This is certainly much cooler than any camp I went to as a kid!

Super big congrats to Trishia & Justin and wow what a great wedding you had! and Jodi & Kurt, thank you so much for  letting me share your beautiful photos. Readers, I couldn’t show them all so head on over to Jodi & Kurts blog for more greatness.

But let’s not forget all of the other vendors who contributed:

florist:  Flower Fields, caterer/shortcake:  Full Circle Catering, rentals: Festive Fare, groomsmen vests: Brightwall, boutonnieres: Blue Lemon Provisions, cotton ties:  TuxAndTulle, Justin’s wedding band:  Zoe and Doyle, dress: David’s Bridal, bridesmaid dresses: Bella Bridesmaid, hair: The Salon of Lexington

A Wedding at Coolbawn Quay

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

The blog post began life as something totally different than what it has now become but I don’t care because we all love real weddings {especially Irish ones} and this is a particularly gorgeous one.

In fact as soon as I saw it I was on the phone to David McCelland, the photographer who beautifully and creatively captured all of the fabulous detail in this wedding of Sheena and Dave at Coolbawn Quay. She is just gorgeous and obviously has an enviable style.

This is a post fairly full of photos but I don’t care. I wanted you to see as much as you can but there are more on David’s website here where he tells us that he thinks this is one of the most beautiful weddings he has ever shot.

You can certainly see why.

Did you catch all of that detail??? The painted sign as you arrive at Coolbawn Quay, The wicker heartshaped chalkboard hanging on the wall inside the the bridal suite, the socks for the boys, the glasses for the bridal party, Sheena’s amazing dress and stunning headpiece, the beautiful ribbons in the church, the order of service booklets, the little tags on each and every straw all handmade by Sheena, the dessert table, the bunting, the paper pom poms, sweet bags, table plans!

Pure fabulousness! A huge congratulations to Sheena and Dave, great work Sheena and David McCelland, thank you for letting me share!
