Meetings and Interviews with Vendors

I had a busy weekend with one of my couples meeting and interviewing vendors and suppliers. It was great fun but tough sometimes so I thought I’d put out a few tips, hints and pointers today.

Note that these are for Brides and the couple as well as the suppliers!

Bring along any correspondence you already have had with each other. Hopefully you have seen some of your suppliers products and you have already told the supplier of your expectations and budget.

Have an idea of what you are looking for. If not in pictures, have some good description words ready about your style and how you imagine things to look.

Know your venue. Where things can go, should go and where you would like them to go.

Listen. Keep an open mind to new ideas that they may have.

Have a list. Come with a list of questions to begin with {not necessarily a checklist} because to start with a question or two will open things up and you will cover a lot more.

Take notes. To keep track of ideas, prices, budgets and decisions.

Don’t schedule too much. Three appointments in a day is plenty, your energy will dip after that. Brides, don’t schedule two of the same suppliers in one day. You will feel like you are repeating yourself over and over and may forget something thinking you have already said it. Suppliers, know who else is being interviewed on the same day and come prepared to wow them.

Follow up. Email with a summary of the meeting in the few days following. You may have thought of items that you would like to clear up or elaborate on. Mention likes and dislikes and if you want to go with the supplier or not. Don’t leave each other hanging without an answer on if you would like to proceed.

One note specifically to suppliers (but brides can read it too):

Although your meeting may be in a hotel or coffee shop and the Bride is not a Fortune 500 company, remember, this is a job interview. Come prepared with a portfolio, references, ready to talk about your knowledge,  you and your business. This is your expertise and you should be able to win Mastermind on the subject of yourself and your business!
