Most guests know what they are going to get when they sign up RSVP to a wedding. Beef or fish of some sort. But why not consider something different?
Admittedly this is easier with more intimate weddings but there are still lots of ways to shake things up and personalize your wedding day menu with most venues are willing to have you sit down with their chef and go over options.
Here are some ideas:

Extend the welcome drinks reception á la the Americans and have more food at this time then go for a more simple but still fabulous 2 or 3 course sit down meal instead of 4 or 5 courses. People like to mix and mingle so consider having food stations or a larger selection of beautifully prepared passed canapés and hors d’oeuvres to act as a starter before your guests go in for dinner.
Local and fresh. These words are thrown around a lot these days when talking about food, but how great food is when it really is local and fresh! Choose a great in season, local traditional menu. Then tell your guests on the menu where the produce has come from, the times that it is in season and give descriptions on how it is cooked. Give them the proof of fresh!

Go with a theme. Whether you tie it into a wedding theme you may have or not {retro food could be fun!}, want to bring in an ethnic or regional theme or feeling, keep it consistent with the food. Maybe a course for each place you have visited in your travels? a down home country feeling of your mother’s or family recipes? Imagine a winter wedding full of pure comfort food. Do Gourmet burgers where your guests get to choose the fillings. So much choice!

Do more dishes with smaller portions. Similar to a tasting menu. If you really care about your food pick out a progressive type menu with 5 or 6 courses including the fish and meat and ending with cheeses and port. If you are really up for it change the wines per course!
Don’t want to change things up too much? Let your main courses go naked. Have your beef or fish simply cooked with but place a larger variety of different sauces on the table for your guests to choose from themselves. Give them three or 4 of each to be passed family style. Your guests get a better choice and can interact together.
Sit down with your venues chef and have a talk. He may be just as excited as you are to offer something different and creative.
